Osteopathy: Whole-Body Hands-On Care for Pain and Movement

At Bounce Back Physio in Narellan, our osteopaths are AHPRA-registered and work alongside our physiotherapists, chiropractors, exercise physiologists and psychologists. That means if hands-on osteopathy is part of what you need but not all of it, your osteo can refer you across the team without you starting over with a new clinic, a new history or a new diagnosis.

Whether you’re dealing with persistent lower back pain, recurring headaches, a sports injury, postural strain from work or pregnancy-related discomfort, our team is here to figure out what’s going on and build a treatment plan around your body and your goals.

Book your osteopathy appointment online or call us on (02) 4648 1669.

Not sure which practitioner to book?

Our reception team can help match you with the right clinician. For most musculoskeletal conditions, physiotherapy is the recommended starting point, and if another service such as chiropractic, osteopathy or exercise physiology would be beneficial, we’ll coordinate that for you.

What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on, whole-body approach to musculoskeletal care that uses manual techniques to assess and treat pain, restricted movement and joint or muscle problems. Rather than focusing only on the spot that hurts, an osteopath looks at how the rest of your body might be loading, compensating or contributing to the symptom, the shoulders to the hips, the feet to the jaw.

Osteopathy is a regulated allied health profession focused on the assessment, diagnosis and hands-on treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Osteopaths use a combination of manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisation, stretching, dry needling and movement-based rehabilitation to relieve pain, restore movement and support recovery.

What Does an Osteopath Do?

An osteopath uses a combination of hands-on techniques, exercise prescription and education to treat the cause of your pain, not just the symptom. Common techniques include:

  • Soft tissue techniques: massage, myofascial release and trigger-point work for tight muscles and fascia
  • Joint mobilisation and articulation: gentle, rhythmic movements to free up stiff joints and restore range of motion
  • Stretching and muscle energy techniques: guided stretches that use your own muscle contractions to release tension
  • Manipulation: controlled, targeted movements applied to a joint, used selectively and only with consent
  • Cranial osteopathy: very gentle techniques sometimes used for headaches, jaw pain and paediatric care
  • Dry needling: targeted needling of tight muscle bands to reduce pain and release tension (where appropriate)
  • Exercise and movement prescription: progressive strength, mobility and stability exercises to support recovery
  • Postural and ergonomic advice: guidance on how you sit, stand, sleep, lift and train

Conditions Our Osteopaths Treat

Our physiotherapists treat a broad range of conditions across all ages and activity levels. Common presentations include:

Back Pain and Sciatica

Lower back pain, mid-back stiffness, postural pain from desk work, sciatica and pain that radiates into the legs. Our osteopaths assess the whole spine plus the hips and pelvis, because lower back symptoms often involve more than just the painful segment.

Neck and Shoulder Pain

Neck stiffness, tension headaches starting in the neck, shoulder pain, rotator cuff strain and pain between the shoulder blades, including symptoms from desk work, driving, sleep position and repetitive overhead activity.

Headaches and Migraines

Tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches (headaches that originate from the neck) and migraines with a musculoskeletal component. We assess whether stiffness, posture or muscle tension in the neck, jaw and upper back may be contributing.

Jaw (TMJ) Pain

TMJ dysfunction, jaw clicking, jaw stiffness, bruxism-related tightness and associated headaches. Our osteos work on the joints and muscles around the jaw, neck and upper spine, often in coordination with your dentist if appropriate.

Joint and Sports Injuries

Shoulder, hip, knee, ankle and elbow injuries from sport, work or daily life. We treat acute strains and sprains, tendinopathies, repetitive strain injuries and ongoing return-to-sport rehabilitation.

Postural and Desk-Related Pain

Upper back stiffness, rounded shoulder posture, tech neck and lower back tightness from long hours at a desk. We treat the existing pain and give you a clear plan to prevent it returning.

Pregnancy and Postnatal Discomfort

Pelvic and lower back pain in pregnancy, postural changes, rib and mid-back pain, and postnatal recovery support. Treatment is gentle, pregnancy-appropriate and coordinated with our women’s health physiotherapists where needed.

Babies, Children and Adolescents

Some families seek osteopathy for babies, children and teens for issues such as feeding-related neck tightness, postural concerns, growing pains and sports injuries. Techniques and pressures used are appropriate to the child’s age and stage. Treatment is always done with the parent or guardian present, and we are honest about what osteopathy can and cannot help with.

How Osteopathy Works at Bounce Back

What sets Bounce Back apart is that our osteopaths don’t work in a silo. Most of our patients see more than one practitioner at some stage of their care, and our osteos routinely refer across to our physios, chiropractors, exercise physiologists and psychologists. That “one team, joined-up care” model means:

  • Whole-body assessment that fits naturally with osteopathy’s holistic philosophy, we are looking for the cause, not just chasing the symptom
  • Shared notes across practitioners so you don’t have to repeat your story or your scans
  • Easy hand-offs if your condition would benefit from physio, chiro, exercise physiology or pilates as well, same clinic, same team, same plan
  • Studio and gym access on site for supervised rehab and exercise progression where needed

What to Expect at Your First Osteopathy Appointment

If you have never seen an osteopath before, here is what your first visit at Bounce Back will look like.

1

Detailed History and Hands-On Assessment

Your first appointment is structured around a thorough assessment, not just a chat. Your osteopath will take a full history of your symptoms, medical background, lifestyle and goals, then guide you through a physical assessment of your posture, movement and how your body is loading and functioning day to day.

Clear Diagnosis and Explanation

Once the assessment is complete, your osteopath will explain what is going on in plain English: what is likely causing your symptoms, what the recovery process looks like and what treatment options are available.

2

3

Treatment

Most first appointments include some hands-on treatment so you can start feeling improvement immediately. This may involve soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, gentle stretching, dry needling or other techniques appropriate to your condition.

Personalised Home Program

Your osteopath will prescribe a tailored exercise and self-management program to do between appointments. Recovery is built on what you do outside the clinic, not just what happens inside it.

4

5

A Clear Plan Forward

You will leave with a clear plan including how many sessions are likely needed, exercises to do at home, and what milestones to aim for. Care is goal-driven, once you reach your goals, we step you down to maintenance or finish care.

Osteopathy vs Physiotherapy: What's the Difference?

Osteopaths and physiotherapists are both AHPRA-registered allied health professionals who treat musculoskeletal conditions. In practice, the two professions treat many of the same conditions and often use similar hands-on techniques. The biggest difference is that physiotherapy typically places a greater emphasis on exercise rehabilitation, strength building, injury prevention and long-term function, with a broader scope that also covers neurological, cardiorespiratory and post-surgical care. Osteopathy tends to emphasise hands-on whole-body manual therapy and the connections between different body regions.

At Bounce Back, many patients choose physiotherapy as their primary treatment pathway, with osteopathy used where additional hands-on whole-body work may be beneficial. Our practitioners work together to make sure you receive the right care at the right time, with one shared plan across both.

Osteopathy vs Chiropractic: What's the Difference?

Osteopaths and chiropractors are both AHPRA-registered allied health professionals who use hands-on techniques to treat musculoskeletal conditions, particularly back and neck pain. In practice, the two professions treat many of the same conditions and often use overlapping techniques. The biggest difference is that chiropractors are particularly known for spinal adjustments (manipulation) and biomechanical assessment of the spine and nervous system, while osteopathy tends to use a broader range of soft tissue, stretching and gentle joint techniques alongside manipulation, with a strong whole-body emphasis.

At Bounce Back, our osteos and chiropractors work in the same building and share notes on shared patients. If one approach is not the right fit for your condition or preference, your practitioner will refer you across the team, with one shared plan rather than starting over.

Is Osteopathy Safe?

Osteopathic care provided by an AHPRA-registered osteopath is widely considered safe when delivered after a proper assessment and with appropriate technique. Serious adverse events are uncommon. The most frequent side effects are mild and short-lived. Healthdirect notes it is normal to feel sore for the first 24 to 48 hours after a treatment, similar to the soreness you might feel after a gym session or a deep massage.

Before treatment, your osteopath will ask about conditions that can affect technique choice, including osteoporosis, recent fractures, bleeding disorders, hypermobility, recent surgery and any neurological symptoms. If any of these apply, your osteo will adapt or avoid certain techniques and use gentler approaches such as soft tissue work and mobilisation instead of manipulation. If at any point osteopathy is not the right fit for what is going on, our osteos will refer you across to physio, your GP or a specialist.

Osteo Frequently Asked Questions

Should I see an osteopath or a physiotherapist?

For most musculoskeletal conditions, physiotherapy is a strong starting point because of its broader scope across rehabilitation, exercise prescription, post-surgical care and long-term function. Osteopathy is a good option when hands-on whole-body manual therapy is what you’re looking for, or when you’ve tried physiotherapy and want to add another approach. At Bounce Back, our physios and osteos work side by side and will help you choose the right pathway at your first appointment. If your condition would benefit from both, we can build a shared plan across the team without you having to start over.

Osteopathy is a regulated allied health profession that uses hands-on techniques to assess, diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those involving the spine, joints, muscles and fascia. Osteopaths use a combination of soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, stretching, selective manipulation, dry needling, exercise prescription and education to relieve pain, restore movement and help your body function better. The approach is whole-body, the painful area is treated in the context of how the rest of the body is moving.

An osteopath takes a full history, performs a hands-on physical assessment, and then uses a combination of soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, gentle stretching, selective manipulation, dry needling and exercise prescription to treat musculoskeletal conditions. They also provide education on posture, lifestyle and self-management between appointments so you can keep progressing outside the clinic.

Osteopaths treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions including back pain, neck pain, headaches, jaw pain, shoulder and hip pain, sports injuries, postural strain, workplace injuries, pregnancy-related discomfort and conditions in babies and children. The focus is on pain, movement and function rather than internal medical conditions.

Osteopaths in Australia are not medical doctors. They are university-qualified, AHPRA-registered allied health professionals who complete a five-year accredited osteopathy degree. While some osteopaths use the title “Dr” in a clinical setting (as do dentists, pharmacists and other registered health professionals), they are not medical practitioners and do not prescribe medication or perform surgery. In some countries (notably the United States), the term “osteopathic doctor” refers to a different type of qualification (DO), which is a fully licensed medical doctor. That is not the same as an Australian osteopath.

Osteopathic care provided by an AHPRA-registered osteopath is widely considered safe when delivered after a proper assessment. The most common side effect is mild soreness for 24 to 48 hours after a treatment, similar to a deep massage or gym session. Osteopaths tend to use a broader range of soft tissue, stretching and gentle joint techniques alongside selective manipulation, with a strong whole-body emphasis. Chiropractors are particularly known for spinal adjustments (manipulation) and biomechanical assessment of the spine and nervous system. There is significant overlap, and at Bounce Back our osteos and chiros work in the same building and share notes on shared patients.

Osteopaths emphasise hands-on whole-body manual therapy and the connections between different body regions. Physiotherapists have a broader scope across musculoskeletal, neurological and post-surgical conditions, with greater emphasis on exercise rehabilitation. Many people benefit from a combined approach. At Bounce Back our osteos and physios work side by side.

No referral is needed for private osteopathy appointments. A referral or care plan is only required if you are claiming through Medicare (with a Chronic Disease Management plan), DVA or WorkCover. NDIS participants can book directly with an approved plan.

Yes. Our osteopaths treat children and adolescents for conditions including feeding-related neck tightness in babies, growing pains, postural concerns, sports injuries and movement screening. Techniques and pressures used are appropriate to the child’s age and stage, and treatment is always done with the parent or guardian present. We are honest about what osteopathy can and cannot help with for children and will refer to a GP or paediatrician where appropriate.
